GP appointments

The practice is committed to provide you with an appointment within 48 hours but this may not be with the doctor with whom you are registered.  You may book a routine appointment with the doctor of your choice if you do not need to be seen within 48 hours.

If you need to be seen urgently you will be seen the same day.

Routine appointments

You may book routine appointments with your registered GP up to 6 weeks in advance.  For ongoing care, please do book well in advance; this is particularly recommended if the doctor has asked you to make a follow-up appointment.

48 hour appointments

If you have a new or acutely worsening health problem and need to see a healthcare professional within 48 hours, in order for us to direct you to the most appropriate person/service, you will be asked for a brief reason for requesting an appointment.

How to book an appointment

Please telephone or call in at reception during opening hours.  Please be aware that we have a high volume of calls on Mondays, the first day of opening after a bank holiday and weekday mornings before 11.00am - it is best to phone outside these hours for  routine/non urgent matters.

We recommend the use of our online services for booking routine appointments with your registered GP.

Extended Hours

There will be a few appointments available every evening Monday to Thursday between 18:30 and 19:15, and on the second Saturday of each month. These are for routine, pre-bookable appointments with Doctors or Nurse Practitioners only.

Chaperones

Bridport Medical Centre is committed to providing a safe, comfortable environment where patients and staff can be confident that best practice is being followed at all times and the safety of everyone is of paramount importance.

All patients are entitled to have a chaperone present for any consultation, examination or procedure where they consider one is required. The chaperone may be a family member or friend, but on occasions a formal chaperone may be preferred.

Patients are advised to ask for a chaperone if required, at the time of booking an appointment, if possible, so that arrangements can be made and the appointment is not delayed in any way. The Healthcare Professional may also require a chaperone to be present for certain consultations.

All trained chaperones understand their role and responsibilities and are competent to perform that role.

There is no common definition of a chaperone and their role varies considerably depending on the needs of the patient, the healthcare professional and the examination being carried out.

Telephone Advice

For patients who need to speak to a doctor over the telephone, please speak to the receptionist who will arrange for a doctor to ring you back. To enable the doctor to prioritise and schedule his/her calls and workload, you will be asked to give a brief reason for the call.

The receptionist will assist whenever possible by passing on any queries or messages to or from your doctor.

Nurse Appointments

The practice nurses are available from Monday to Friday. They offer a full range of clinics and services.  Due to the specific nature of the clinics, you will be asked to give some brief details of your requirements.  Some letters that we send out have a booking code, please have this handy when you telephone for an appointment. 

Appointment reminders - SMS text messaging

Appointment reminders will be sent to your mobile phone for appointments booked at Bridport Medical Centre.

The message will take a very simple form: "Don't forget your appointment (time/day/date) at The Bridport Medical Centre.  Please call 01308 421896 (office hours only) if you can't attend or reply CANCEL"  If you text CANCEL, this links directly to our clinical system and means the appointment becomes immediately available for re-booking. (N.B. do not add additional words before or after you text CANCEL.)

After your appointment, you will  receive a text to enable you to take part in the Friends and Family Test.  A larger number of patients are currently offering feedback on the service provided by Bridport Medical Centre giving us a more accurate guide to patient satisfaction levels.

We can also notify patients about health campaigns such as the Flu Vaccination programme.

Do we have your mobile phone number? - update your details

If you would like to have access to this service, please ensure that your contact details are up to date - do we have your mobile phone number?  You can update your details as follows: update/complete the 'Change Contact Details' section on SystmOnline, download a Change of Details form to print, pick up a copy from our Information Area or ask for a copy from reception - return paper copies to reception

If you do not wish to receive text message reminders, please speak to one of our receptionists or call 01308 421896.

We will NOT send any medical information by this method or share your details with anyone else. 

Please note : this form of messaging is widely used for hospital appointment reminders and is common practice for many GP practices.

Cancellations

If you cannot attend an appointment for any reason please inform us as soon as possible in order for us to give the slot to someone else.

It is helpful if your contact details are kept up to date in case we need to contact you to cancel an appointment.

Translation Service

For those patients for whom English is not their first language and who are not able to bring along someone who is able to interpret for them or who may not wish to do so, we do have access to a telephone translation service.
